10 ways to make sure you get the best out of your dance classes!
If you are attending dance classes lets face it, you want to get the best out of every class! If you are getting the best experience you can from your dance lessons, you will improve quicker and will enjoy it more. Below are 10 steps to follow, which will help make sure you are truly getting the most out of dance class.
Step 1 – Turn up on time!
Being late to class is one of the worst things you can do, as it will disturb the class and will stop you from focusing 100%. Always give yourself enough time and make sure you warm those muscles up, to avoid injuries.
Step 2 – Make sure you wear the correct uniform!
Check before any dance lesson what the correct uniform rules are. This is all part of the training and will help you concentrate and feel the part. Wearing the correct uniform will also benefit your teacher as they can examine your body properly and they will be able to give you the appropriate corrections.
Step 3 – Focus and Pay Attention!
Whilst in your dance class make sure you give your full focus and attention to what you are doing. If you are concentrating you will take in everything the teacher is trying to put across and your understanding of the technique will improve very quickly. Also do not be afraid to ask your teacher for help with something at any point, as it will show you are wanting to learn and improve.
Step 4 – Listen to your teacher!
Listening to the teacher is so important because you can learn so much from their years of experience and their wealth of knowledge. Remember that they want what is best for you and only want you to be the best that you can be. Also you must respect your teacher and be polite at all times.
Step 5 – Take on Corrections!
If the teacher gives you a correction, take it well and try to carrying through that correction. As they are only trying to make you look the best that you can. This is also goes with praise, if the teacher compliments you on something, accept the compliment gracefully and continue working at that high level. It is also a good idea to have a pad which you can write down all your corrections and good points. You then can review what you have improved on etc.
Step 6 – Work to the best of your ability!
Giving 100% in your classes will make sure you definitely get the best from them and you will notice improvements quicker. Working hard will give you a sense of achievement and it will give you an excellent attitude that will stay with you throughout your life. Your hard working ethic and good attitude will also set a good example on your class mates and the teacher will respond to you in a positive way. Dancing is a difficult skill to master and takes dedication and hard work, because without these you will find yourself stuck at the same level.
Step 7 – Learn the technical terms and syllabus!
Learning the technical terms are really important and is part of learning any new skill, not just for dancing. If the initial terms are learnt then you will find the classes easier to follow, as you will recognise what the teacher is asking you to do. Also if you are planning to take exams within dancing, then a good knowledge of the technical terms will be a must.
Step 8 – Give your input in class!
Often a teacher will ask their students for input and will test your knowledge on the work. Always try to give a clear and precise answer, with the correct demonstration if instructed to do so. It is always a good idea to ask questions and ask for corrections, this way you will gain more from your class and it will show that you want to learn and improve.
Step 9 – Practise as much as you can
Practise makes perfect!! If you practise between your classes you will notice your skill level will improve at a faster rate. The more you do something, the better you will become at that skill. Also if you practise often your confidence will grow and you will be able to enjoy your classes more. Like a sponge, you will absorb everything positive from the lessons.
Step 10 – Performance and having fun!!!!
You may not be on stage but your performance during class is great practise for when you are on that stage! Treat every class as a performance and you will stand out from the crowd. Using your facial expressions will make your work look professional and polished.
But…….the most important factor of doing any dance class is to enjoy yourself!!!! Yes, if you are enjoying yourself then the people watching you will sense that enjoyment. If you work hard and take it seriously you will become more confident! With that confidence you will become more relaxed and with that relaxed attitude, you will enjoy yourself more!!
