Shanty Theatre Company

Shanty started on a beach. They tell the stories that make-up the fabric of a place, spring from its history and are wound up in its myths. The Story Giant is the company’s seventh production since its conception in 2007, and will draw on the company staples of actor-musicianship, multi-role storytelling, magic and light touch comedy, which have come to characterise Shanty’s work.

The Story Giant

It’s night time on Dartmoor and a cold wind whistles through the bracken and gorse, making them sing. Deep in his castle, the Story Giant is dying. Through the centuries he has gathered all the tales in existence.

All that is, except one.

Tonight his very life relies on finding it.

Exploring folklore, myth and fairytale from around the world, join Shanty Theatre Company as we meet ghosts, talking skulls, monsters, thieves, tricksters, dragons, and homing chickens in an adventure to find the last story on earth.

But the giant knows all of these tales, and a great many others too.

Adapted from the book by legendary Liverpool poet Brian Patten, this is a show for adults and children. It deals with the dark, rich history of story and fairytale from around the world, whilst retaining the sense of humour that Shanty has become known for. This really is a family production, to be enjoyed by anyone of seven years and older.

Shanty, who are working with Brian Patten to adapt the book for the stage, have been developing The Story Giant through Bristol Old Vic’s Ferment programme. The play is adapted by Harry Long and Stu Mcloughlin and directed by Tim Bell. Shanty are looking for a dedicated team of actor musicians who don’t mind the rigours of small-scale touring. They must be versatile character actors with musicianship to an extremely high standard.
