What is Bokwa?

BOKWA® is the trademark for a style of dance fitness based on pseudo fight-moves formed to a hip-hop beat and choreographed so that the steps form letters or numbers on the floor.
What does BOKWA mean?
The word BOKWA is made in two parts: “BO” from BOXING and “KWA” from KWAITO, a genre of music that emerged from Johannesburg, South Africa, during the 1990s.
Where did BOKWA come from?
BOKWA® was created in 2000 by Paul Mavi, a South African dancer and fitness instructor living in California. The moves are inspired by South African war dance, Capoeira the Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance and music, Kickboxing and aerobic steps.
What is unique about BOKWA?
BOKWA moves are based on the shapes of letters or numbers, which are stepped out on the floor during a routine that can be pinned to the wall at the front of the class.
Alternatively the instructor can give direction using hand signals or American sign language to describe the shape of the next step in the routine.
