Q: What do I need to wear for a Royal Academy of Dance Ballet Class?
For ballet classes that lead to an examination by The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) you must wear ballet clothes that meet the exacting requirements of the RAD syllabus. Here we will help you find out what it is you need to wear for ballet class. The RAD ballet syllabus is graded according to the dancer’s ability, or for young children, their age. Young boys and girls will start their ballet career by going to classes for ‘Pre-primary’ & ‘Primary’ and in doing so will get their first ballet costume. After Primary the dancer will then progress through grades 1 to 8, and can expect their ballet dancewear requirements to keep changing through all of the grades. As you would expect, the male dancewear requirements are different to the female costumer requirements. We shall start with listing the RAD clothing requirements for male ballet dancers.
Q: What do boys wear for ballet class with the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus?
Boy’s Ballet Exam Wear for Pre-Primary/Primary
Boys will wear a white short sleeve leotard, sometimes called an Aaron leotard, with Navy or Black Cotton/Lycra ballet shorts over. On their feet they will wear White ankle Socks and either White canvas ballet shoe or Black leather ballet shoe, as decided by the ballet teacher.
Male Ballet Exam Wear for Grades 1 – 8
For all grades the male dancer will continue to wear the White ankle Socks and Black leather ballet shoe, and can also continue to wear the ballet shorts but he may feel more comfortable switching to Navy stirrup tights, so long as the ballet teacher permits, and also to the, more mature, sleeveless leotard in white.
